controls, and gauges. If you have a standard color scheme or legends that match
your other apparatus, specify them.
A deck gun is not required but is certainly a good option to specify. A manual
deck gun that is removable and can be
used with a portable base is a versatile
accessory. For safety, many purchasers
specify remote controls located at the
pump panel so a firefighter doesn’t have
to climb on top of the apparatus. Another
option is a raised deck gun to reach up
over the cab roof.
The pump shift control and associated
indicator lights must be convenient to
the driver. You may wish to specify a
manual pump shift override in case the
main controls fail.
The most common fire pumps today
are of the single-stage type. In the
distant past, lower horsepower gasoline
engines needed to use two-stage fire
pumps to reach the higher pressure. The
current high-power diesel engines can
easily pump at full capacity while driving
a single-stage pump. If a two-stage
pump is specified, the series/parallel
control must indicate the mode that the
pump is in.
You can control the pump output
pressure with an electronic pressure
governor that adjusts the engine revolu-
tions per minute or with a relief valve that
circulates water from the pressure side
of the pump back to the intake side. The
pressure control device must limit a pres-
sure increase to less than 30 psi when all
discharges are shut down.
The pump control panel can be of
several configurations and placed in
several locations. Side and top-mount
panels are probably the most common.
Other locations are top-side mount, rear,
front, inside a compartment, and inside

are required to be not more than eight
inches apart and at least one inch larger
than the line gauges. Digital gauges
are allowed in place of analog gauges.
Pressure gauges are required on all 1½-
inch and larger discharges and must be
located within six inches of the operating
control. Flow meters are permitted, but
